Dimapur, Oct. 12 (EMN): With the active support of the Kohima forest division under the ‘green initiative programme’ which mainly focuses on schools and their commitment towards green activities has declared the Government Middle School, Botsa as a ‘green school’ on Oct. 10 thereby making it as the first school to acheive such a tag in the state.
The green initiative programme has two components viz. ‘green future nursery (which the school already has under the same programme) and plastic free school programme that aims to create awareness on afforestation and reduce plastic pollution respectively.
The district forest officer, Kohima Rongsenlemla Imchen, IFS, expressed gratitude to the school authority and the students for their active participation towards the initiative.
She also highlighted on the importance of the role of students in fighting plastic pollution and reminded that being plastic free does not necessarily mean zero-use of plastic but reducing plastic footprint especially with regard to ‘single use plastic’ items.
Forest Ranger, Sanchu spoke about the effects of plastic pollution on environment and the responsibilities of the students for a plastic-free lifestyle.
The students and the faculties made plastic-free commitments by reading out the pledge which was led by Ranger, Pezaneinuo. To mark the occasion, eco-friendly waste bins were distributed to the school. Meanwhile, the school authority thanked the department for the initiative and assured to continue with the green commitments.
