Global Sustainability Award for IBSD

Dimapur, August 24: Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) a National Institute of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, located in North East received the Global Sustainability Award 2016 at New Delhi. Professor Dinabandhu Sahoo, Director of the North East based National Institute received the award on behalf of IBSD in a glittering function during the 7th World Renewable Energy Technology Congress (WRETC) held at the Manekshaw Expo and Convention Centre New Delhi from August 21-23. The function was attended by many National and International delegates including officials from Central Government and was supported by Ministry of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Govt. of India and UNESCO Regional Office, New Delhi. The Award was given to IBSD for its pioneering work in North East Himalayas in the field of Sustainability Management. It may be mentioned that during the last one and half year IBSD has been taking proactive steps in Sustainable Utilization of Himalayan Bioresources for Socio Economic Development of the region. In recent times it organized several unique programme for the local stake holders in the field of Entrepreneurship Development in Bamboo, Fisheries Resources as well as Organic Farming. These programme are very useful for Natural Resources Management and creation of new jobs for the unemployed people, said Professor Sahoo. He said the launching of Cherry Blossom programme by IBSD in Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram has generated a lot of interests in other NE states and created a Global impact. It may be mentioned that last month, IBSD received an International Sustainability Award in Philippines for its Academic Leadership. Professor Sahoo dedicated this award to the people of North East and urged the people to go for Sustainable use of resources and sustainable living. Other winners are ONGC, Mahindra Rise, Reliance Power and ALTER NRG,Canada. etc. North East Region of India is a genetic treasure house of plants, animals and microbial resources. It is one of the 12 mega biodiversity rich zones of the world under Indo-Burma Hotspot that ranks 8th among the 25 Biodiversity Hotspots of the World. Realizing the importance of the rich biodiversity and the unique bioresources of the region, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India established the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) at Imphal, Manipur in the year 2001. It is not only a unique institute of its kind in India but also amongst the very few in the world. The main mandate of this institute is conservation and sustainable utilization of bioresources for the socio-economic development of the region.
