Glaucoma is a group of disorders that causes optic neuropathy associated with visual field defects. It is the leading cause of irreversible preventable blindness globally. Glaucoma can remain typically asymptomatic until advanced visual loss occurs and is aptly called “Silent Thief of sight”. Early detection and treatment is key to slow down the disease process because once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed.
The risk factors are increased eye pressure, advancing age, family history, hypertension, diabetes and use of steroids, etc.
World Glaucoma week, is a global initiative to raise awareness on Glaucoma and is being observed this year from the 6th – 12th of March. The goal is to alert everyone to have regular eye and optic nerve checks to detect glaucoma as early as possible and initiate its management. Facilities for detection of glaucoma are available in all District Hospitals throughout the state.
