Dimapur, May 14 (EMN): While welcoming the decision of the state government to hold mini-hornbill festival in all the districts and sub-divisions coinciding with the respective tribal festivals of Nagaland, Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) has resented for not including ‘Wangala,’ a post harvest festival of the Garo community, which falls on November 21.
A press release issued by NGTC president Biplab K Sangma stated that Garo tribe, being one of the recognised indigenous tribes, has five recognised villages concentrate in the district of Dimapur since times immemorial.
“We have been a part of the main Hornbill festival since many years showcasing and presenting our culture and traditions with all the tribes of Nagaland. It is worth mentioning that we have a “Garo Nokpante” traditional Morung at Kisama, Naga Heritage village, a privilege strictly bestowed only to the recognised tribes of Nagaland,” Sangma maintained.
He stated that non-inclusion of the Wangala festival has utterly neglected the Garos, which has left them dismayed and deprived.
He stated that the union along with the Garo Students’ Union Nagaland Zone (GSUNZ) had met the state governor PB Acharya at Raj Bhavan, Kohima, on May 11 and submitted a memorandum on the matter and other grievances of the Garos of Nagaland.
