The advisor for Art & Culture and Tourism, Khehovi Yepthomi inaugurated Gallery of Contemporary Art (GoCA), an exclusive gallery to promote the local artists, at Regional Centre for Excellence in Music and Performing Arts (RCEMPA) in Jotsoma on Sep. 24.
“Break out of the chains of societal expectations and explore the world around you. Be an individual, hold your identity, stop depending and learn to be self sufficient! No miracle will happen, God helps those who help themselves,” said Khehovi.
He expressed concern that Nagas talk only about unemployment and many issues but hardly talk about the talents that God has given.
While lamenting that the society has given too much importance to white collared jobs, he encouraged the people present to make used of the talents in music, art, sports etc. He said, “many of us are afraid to venture into unknown territories because of fear of failure.”
Yepthomi, commended the initiative of Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA) under the Theja Meru, Advisor of TaFMA for successfully opening the art gallery co-inciding with 100 days completion of TaFMA.
Delivering a short speech, Theja Meru informed that the initiative of the GoCA was to support artists and to encourage them. He also informed that there will be four day art camp from Oct. 7 till the 10th at RCEMPA in Jotsoma where there will be live art and painting.
Further, he also added that an art festival in partnership with Eastern Art is also scheduled to be held in Dimapur from October 15 till the 19th to give space to artists to paint and sell.
Also, Meru said, GoCA is a first of its kind in the city and expressed happiness and said that 80% of the artists are self taught artists. He also informed that the gallery would be open from Monday to Friday from 11:00 am till 03:00 pm for visitors and public to enjoy, buy and patronage the art.
When asked about the gallery show, he informed that in future there will be solo shows and others for those artists and local NGO’s who have empanelled with TaFMA on MoU basis in order to facilitate the artists and to support them.
Arts and works of artists like Cynthia Kolakhe, Among Venuh, Arenla Nungshi, Lipok Manen, Mhayani Kikon, Mhasiselhou Viyie, Tia Aier, Akup Buchen and Chuten Jamir are on display.
