Kohima, July 10 (EMN): G Rio School narrowly defeated Mount Sinai Higher Secondary School 4-3 via tie breaker after the match ended 1-1 in the stipulated time and entered the semifinals of the tournament as the Pool-A winner at Kohima local ground on Monday.
The ongoing 1st Kohima District Inter-School Football tournament is jointly organised by Royal Club Kohima and School Education department.
G. Rio School escaped defeat, thanks to a soggy ground, and entered the semis as the title contender for the tournament.
Owing to bad weather, Mt. Sinai team were virtually ahead from the beginning and they should have taken the lead in the 29th minute but the shot got stuck near the goal line due to the soggy condition and the keeper managed to get hold of the ball.
Two minutes later, G. Rio broke the deadlock in the 31st minute though goalkeeper’s error for Sangti to tap in and take the lead.
Shovelo Duolo of Mt. Sinai HSS was cautioned by the referee in the 35th minute but he rose up for the occasion to find the much-needed goal for Mt. Sinai as his side fought back and found the equaliser in the 39th minute when Benlo Kemp headed the ball into Shovelo’s path and he coolly converted the goal to make it 1-1 in the first half.
Rain played spoilsport in the second half as both teams failed to find the back of the net despite the numerous attacks on the soaked ground. Wanmei, Captain of G.Rio and Shoungoalou Pohena of Mt.Sinai HSS were each shown a yellow card in the 81st minute for unsporting behavior.
After the 90 minutes stipulated time, instead of proceeding to extra time, direct tie-breaker was applied to the match to decide the winner keeping in account the waterlogged ground and luck favored G. Rio in the shootout.
With the win, Pool-A winner G Rio School will face the loser of Tuesday’s match (Pool-B final) in the semifinal match on July 12. While Mt. Sinai HSS despite the loss has a chance in the semis as they face the winner of Pool B finals on July 13.
