Imphal, Jan. 16 (EMN):
The 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament will be held at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground from January 17 to the 21st.

A total of six women polo teams, including the host state, Indian Polo Association and four foreign teams will compete in the said tournament organised by All Manipur Polo Association in partnership with Polo Yatra, the Indian women’s polo initiative of Huntre! Equine under the sponsorship of state Tourism department and Tourism ministry.

The four women foreign teams are from USA, Great Britain, Argentina and Egypt.

The tournament also marks the sesquicentennial of polo in England. Major Mark Cann of the UK Armed Forces Polo Association, with HRH The Prince of Wales as its Patron, said, “Polo150 is pleased to officially designate the 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament the closing event of the UKAFPA’s world-wide commemoration of the advent of Polo in England from India in 1869.”

The visiting women polo teams (each team comprising six players plus officials) will also make a trip to several tourism destinations in Manipur such as Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park, WW II cemeteries and Kangla Fort of the erstwhile kingdom of Manipur. They will also visit Manipur’s celebrated handloom at Nupi Keithel (women’s market), arguably the largest women-only market in the world.
