- DIMAPUR — Former
Chief Minister SC Jamir on Saturday said that the existence of more than two
dozen armed Naga groups “is obviously an abnormal political phenomenon.”
- The veteran politician—who has had gubernatorial stints in
Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Odisha—made this remark during the launch of a
biography of Walunir L Sanen Ao, authored by Tiala Imchen, at Eralibill in
Dimapur.
- Sharing a “panoramic view of the landscape of Naga polity,”
Jamir mentioned that there is total chaos in the entire gamut of Naga polity
and the much-cherished Naga political movement is landed in a nightmarish
plight “and the underground leaders who had been handling the Naga political
issue are entrapped in the web of their own follies.”
- According to him, any movement—and especially a freedom
movement—should have the full involvement and backing of the people, but in the
case of the Naga movement, there are more than two dozen faces, “which is
obviously an abnormal political phenomenon.”
- Furthermore, he said that the “shipwreck of the Naga
political movement is now on the verge of sinking in the blue sea,” and the
dire need of the hour is to salvage the sinking ship of the Naga political
voyage.
- Jamir said that neither of the agreements signed by Naga
groups with the Centre—Framework Agreement and Agreed Position—provides for
Naga sovereignty and integration.
- “Whatever has been done, it was according to contemporary
political realities; if so, why not tell the people frankly?” he maintained.
- According to Jamir, Nagaland is a land of multiple prime
ministers, governors, commanders-in-chief, etc., and the elected government is
compelled to play only second fiddle in governance.
- He suggested that the people of Nagaland in general and the
leaders of both overground and underground organisations in particular need to
seriously look at the alarming scenario in the state.
