Dimapur, Oct. 5 (EMN): Commemorating the world wildlife week, wildlife division, Dimapur, organised a programme with 50 students and six teachers from Government Middle School, Naga New Model, Dimapur, on the theme “Big cats: Predators under threat” on October 4 at Nagaland Zoological Park.
On reaching the venue, students were introduced to the zoo and the importance of celebrating the wildlife by Obed Bohovi, Director NZP, wherein he stressed on the importance of conservation and preservation of flora and fauna.
Detour to zoo was guided by the zoological staff along with wildlife officials.
The programme was chaired by Kikavi Chophi, Forest Ranger, while a keynote address was delivered by Menya Wongto, Forest Ranger, where he emphasised on the conservation and protection of wild animals particularly on big cats such as tigers and leopards which are on the verge of extinction. He also reminded the students to keep the environment clean in accordance with Swachh Bharat mission.
A quiz competition was held and prizes were distributed to all the participants.
The department also donated a framed picture of leopard and posters to the school.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Tonilo Swu, school’s teacher, wherein she thanked the wildlife wing, forest department, for reaching out to the school students. She commented that it was the first time the wildlife division had organised such programme for the students.
In a related programme, department of environment, forests and climate change organised wildlife awareness programme on October 4 and 5 at Government High School, Nyengching, in Longleng district.
On the occasion, drawing competition was organised by Alemwapang Imchen, ACF in-charge of Longleng range, based on wildlife theme. The welcome address was delivered by the school’s headmaster P Chinglong Phom.
Beizo Suokhrie, DFO, Longleng division, spoke on the importance of preserving the declining forest and wildlife in the state. He emphasised on the potentiality of younger generation towards improving the age old system of traditional hunting and work towards living in harmony with nature.
