Several locations recorded knee- to chest-deep water, while residents expressed fear that the situation could deteriorate further if rainfall continues.
The Nagarjan road stretch was inundated with knee-deep water, while the premises of the Fisheries Department office in the vicinity were also flooded. The taxi stand opposite Naga Shopping Arcade (Super Market) was submerged, and adjoining areas affected as well.
United Colony was among the worst-affected areas, with around 10 houses reportedly inundated by floodwater. The Lotha Sector road in United Colony was submerged under chest-deep water, disrupting movement in the area.
The SAI hostel training ground was also affected by the flooding.
The Government Higher Secondary School, Nagarjan, was inundated but it did not affect classes as the school remains closed for the summer break.
In River Belt Colony, overflowing drainage water entered residential houses, while two vehicles parked inside premises were reportedly half-submerged in floodwater.
The Missionaries of Charity Mother Teresa Home was also flooded in the early hours of Saturday. However, the water level at the facility had receded considerably by evening.
Purana Bazaar-B village, NST Colony and Aoyimti village were also affected, with waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas following the overnight downpour.
With several areas still waterlogged and drainage systems struggling to clear the accumulated water, residents remain concerned that further rainfall could worsen the situation and lead to additional inundation.
Student dies of electrocution
In an unfortunate incident, a 5th Semester student from the Department of Management, Tetso College, Chümoukedima, student died of electrocution after water entered his house, PTI has reported.
The deceased has been identified as Imnamoa Longchar, a BBA student of Tetso College,. He died after coming in contact with an inverter after water entered his home at Diphuphar, officials said.
According to family sources, Longchar was attempting to unplug an inverter when he was electrocuted amid the flash flooding.
His body was handed over to family members after completion of the necessary formalities.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid contact with electrical poles, wires, transformers, inverters and other electrical equipment in or near flooded areas.
IMD issues orange alert
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
Heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of North East India, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, as per the Met Department.
