WSH demands adequate compensation to affected people
Dimapur, July 12 (EMN): Incessant rain in the past several days has cause massive flooding in Yeveto and surrounding villages under Niuland sub-division in Dimapur district.
Report reaching here said villagers are undergoing threats as several houses were damaged. Besides, it was reported that several properties and lands were washed away.
Villagers stated that several complaints were made earlier to the concerned authority, which resulted only on visit and survey. It alleged that promises to look into the issue were neglected by the concerned authority. The villagers have sought the intervention of the higher authority at the earliest and assist the people to rebuild their lives.
In a related statement, the Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has urged the Parliamentary Secretary of Irrigation & Flood Control, Jacob Zhimomi, to immediately intervene and look in to the plight of the villages of Yeveto, Hakhizhe, Kiyezu, Hetoi and Zuheshe, which have been submerged by the waters of Zubza river where paddy fields, plantations and many other properties have been damaged.
In a joint statement, WSH president Zheshito Swu and the general secretary Vikato K Achumi have urged the Parliamentary Secretary to own responsibility as the affected villages lie under his constituency. They have alleged that despite tall promises and assurance to build good flood control measures by the Parliamentary Secretary has not matched up with his words.
The WSH has demanded proper compensation for the properties damaged by the flood. It said the unfortunate villagers have to undergo through such hard times during every monsoon due to the absence of proper flood control measures.
WSH also asked the elected representatives to be responsible towards the electorates as they have been elected by the people to do their duties, adding one should not hold a portfolio if he is not capable of holding the responsibility.
‘Mere holding of a portfolio and shrugging of the responsibility bestowed on them have only brought disgrace to the community and misery on the people,’ the statement added.
