Imphal, Sep. 19 (EMN): Incessant rains since last evening once again caused havoc in the flood prone Manipur, flooding at many places both in hills and valleys on Tuesday.
The strong currents of Chakpi River washed away earth portion of Chakpi Bridge which connects many villages of Chandel district at around 10 am. However there is no report of any human casualty till the report goes to the press. Earlier the bridge which is currently under construction along with around 10 smaller bridges was badly damaged by a flood in August 2015.
Most of the low lying areas in various assembly constituencies in and around Imphal town including Keishamthong, Sagolband, Uripok and Thangmeiband faced the flash flood due to lack of proper drainage systems.
The main road leading to various central institutions including Kendriya Vidyalaya, Central Agricultural University buildings and ICAR at Lamphelpat area, once a popular wetland of the state also faced flash flood after the area witnessed 87.6 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, according to ICAR Manipur state unit weather report.
The situation has worsened after Wangjing,Kakching Khunou,Sekmai rivers overflows in Manipur’s Thoubal,Kakching districts while another rivulet was reported breached at Wabagai Thingel in Kakching area.
The water level of major rivers-Imphal, Iril, Nambul which passes through Imphal city are increasing slowly and flowing in an alarming rate, reports added.
