Mokokchung, Aug. 15 (EMN): In what could be termed as ‘seizing advantage in a downturn,’ the Youth Association Marepkong (YAM) launched its flagship programme called “Facilitating self-sufficiency programme-2020” on August 16.
The programme aims to transform unemployed and drop-out youth into a productive self-employed individual and be an asset to the society.
In an interaction, YAM president Bedangsunep termed unemployment problem as the biggest crisis the society is facing today. He informed that the youth association, after thorough deliberation on the issue, conceived the idea to launch the flagship programme.
He added that under the flagship programme, special focus would be given to the drop out youths since educated unemployed youth could somehow manage themselves through various means.
The president also informed that under the flagship programme, only the genuine youth would be selected to undergo training on certain trade skills using scientific approach before providing free assistance to them. He added that the association would strictly monitor the project after delivering assistance to ensure success story of the flagship programme.
“As a pilot project under the flagship programme, we have started poultry farming wherein five beneficiaries have undergone thorough skill training on poultry. Today, we are giving them chicks free of cost along with feeds, feeders and drinker and other kits to start-up their poultry venture,” the president said.
The president further informed that YAM plans to evolve the flagship programme into a bigger spectrum by adding more pilot projects which would benefit the drop-out and educated unemployed youth to become self-employed.
Earlier during the launching programme at Marepkong community hall, sponsor of the poultry project Bendangonen stated that livestock economy is a fast economy.
“Statistical analyses show an approximately 80 pigs are slaughtered for consumption in a day and around 3000 poultry chickens are brought per day in Mokokchung alone,” he claimed.
He lamented that this lucrative business is control by outsiders instead of the local residents. In this connection, he said to seize the opportunity, one must first learn the scientific way to become the master of that art.
