KOHIMA — Five villages in Mon district have been selected as Horticulture Model Villages (HMV), Minister for Women Resource Development & Horticulture Salhoutuonuo Kruse informed the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a starred question raised by MLA A Nyamnyei Konyak, Kruse stated that the five villages were selected between 2023-24 and 2026-27, with each village focusing on a specific horticultural crop.
The selected villages and crops are Tanhai for citrus (2023-24), Chenwetnyu for large cardamom (2024-25), Yonghong for kiwi (2025-26), and Changlangsu and Sangsa for kiwi and Naga Mircha respectively (2026-27).
Meanwhile, Konyak urged the Department of Horticulture to undertake soil testing to identify suitable horticultural crops in different areas. He also called for extensive soil testing across the state to help farmers select crops suited to local soil conditions.
He further sought an update on the post of Sub-Divisional Horticulture Officer (SDHO) at Tobu, stating that the officer had retired years ago and asking whether a replacement had been posted.

In response, Kruse said the main concept of the Horticulture Model Village is one village, one crop, aimed at developing horticulture clusters in the selected villages.
She said the initiative seeks to encourage farmers to undertake intensive crop cultivation by adopting innovative and modern technologies to increase production and productivity, while strengthening marketing-related activities for farmers and Self-Help Groups.
The minister added that the HMV initiative also aims to aggregate farmers' produce, undertake primary post-harvest operations, empower communities and villages to take responsibility for their development, and improve the socio-economic status of farmers. Kruse further informed the House that an SDHO had already been posted at Tobu.
