Imphal, October 31: Department of Fisheries organised a Fish Mela at THAU Ground, Thangmeiband, Imphal in connection with Ningol Chakkouba, which is one of the most beautiful and meaningful festival in the State today.
The mela was participated by fish farmers from all the districts of the state. The highest fish producing farmers will be awarded Rs 1 lakh, while the second and third winners will receive Rs 70,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
25 selected losers will also be awarded Rs 7000 each to encourage better production. The highest indigenous fish producer will be awarded Rs 20,000. The vehicles utilised for transportation of fishes to the mela ground were provided by the department free of cost to the fish farmers.
Speaking as the chief guest, Fishery minister Md. Abdul Nasir said one of the greatest achievements of the department is production of indigenous fishes such as Pengba, the state fish, and Ngaton besides making the State self-sufficient in fish production.Pengba (Osteobrama belangeri) have already been vanished from wild due to various factors. The main objectives of the fair is to give recognition to fish farmers, encouraging and awarding incentives to the farmers and to market their produce without involving middlemen at reasonable rate.
Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Dr. Najma A Heptulla, Chief Minister O Ibobi, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Assembly Speaker Th Lokeshwar, Presidents of Pradesh Congress Committee and BJP Manipur Pradesh besides IG Assam Rifles (South) and GOC Red Shields also extended their greetings on the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba and Kut festivals to the people of the state wishing them happiness and joy.
