The Women Police Station will function independently in registration and investigation of cases apart from initiating necessary legal actions relating to crime against women and children within its jurisdiction. Home Minister Y Patton, in his inaugural address, said a full-fledged women police station in Dimapur was a long felt need for the citizens as the lone Women Cell, that was attached with the East Police Station, was functioning for the entire district dealing with ever increasing cases of crime against women and children. He also said graduating from a Women Cell to a separate independent Women Police Station comes with immense responsibilities, expectation and duties upon the police personnel manning the Station. He, therefore, urged consistent efforts to upgrade the police performance in tune with the changing times and requirements so as to gain full faith and confidence of the people. Besides, he encouraged to conduct various seminars and trainings with a module designed to update women police officers about the guidelines for handling and probing cases of crime against women and children in terms of legal requirements. He also suggested making efforts for counselling and helping in rehabilitation of the victims of such crimes apart from other assistance. While pointing out that many crimes might have gone unreported as women generally do not want to go to police station apprehending gender insensitivity, he hoped the perception will change significantly in the days to come with the setting up of the separate all-women police station. He said the present Police Commissionerate system was conceptualised and put in place so as to effectively maintain law and order situation in a cosmopolitan city like Dimapur. He accredited the success to the concerted and committed political will of the present government under the leadership of the Chief Minister TR Zeliang. Simultaneously, Patton also launched the Dimapur Police CCTV network system within the police station premises. He said CCTV in various strategic locations within the Police Commissionerate was installed in order to equip the police with scientific aid in policing. The state-of-the-art CTV units have been installed in different locations with all feeds integrated to a Control Room through internet protocol. The units could be monitor and view via the internet even in smart phones. Patton exuded confidence that the facilities will go a long way in providing a level of public safety and security and also prevent crime and serves as deterrent for prospective offenders. DGP LL Doungel and Dimapur Commissioner of Police Liremo Lotha also spoke on the occasion.
