Highschool, March 6 (EMN): The first Super Six Cricket Tournament on the theme, "Pursue Oneness," organised by Yepthomi Brothers got underway at Rüzhükhrie GHSS playground at Highschool in Kohima on Saturday.
Altogether, 31 teams from and within Kohima are participating in the competition, and a total of 12 matches were played on the first day.
Ato Puro, personal secretary to Dr. Neikiesalie Kire, advisor for Urban and Municipal Affairs, while speaking at the inaugural function highlighted the scope of cricket in the state and to pursue the game as one's profession.
He encouraged the youths to take up sports seriously, adding that NPSC or UPSC "are not the only way to live like as most Naga do."
Puro who also interacted with the three participating teams from Kohima Orphanage Destitute Home expressed his desire to see the players representing not only the state but the country in the long run.
Anato Sema, convenor of the tournament, said that there should be a task force for promoting sports in the state like it has Task Force for Music and Arts (Tafma) for the musicians.
Speaking with Eastern Mirror, he said that there is scope for generating revenue and employment opportunities for the youngsters if cricket stadiums like the one at Sovima in Dimapur were converted into an international cricket stadium where the state can host international or IPL matches with the availability of some five star hotels.
Sema also laid emphasis on the importance of constructing some cricket playgrounds in the state capital so that youngsters can pick up the sports as their profession instead of "loitering around".
Keneingulie Kiso administered the oath to the teams.
