Dimapur, Jan. 28 (EMN): Former Nagaland state chaplain Rev. Yankey Patton passed away at his residence in Diphupar, Dimapur on Friday. He was 94 and is survived by his son Nchumbemo Patton, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Born on March 15 in 1927, Rev. Patton became the first state chaplain in 1989 and continued to serve the state till 2003. He also served as the police chaplain for two years (1987 to 1988), informed an update from DPRO Dimapur.
His funeral service will be held at 9 am on January 30 at Lotha Baptist Church, Diphupar, before his mortal remains is taken to his native village Raman for the last rites.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed grief over the demise of the former Nagaland state chaplain, describing him as one of the most well-known and respected pastors in the state who served its people for about 15 years.
“Rev Yankey Patton was a dedicated and humble servant of God. During his earlier days as a State Chaplain, no government's facilities were given to him, not even a vehicle for his movement. So, holding his humble umbrella, and walking on foot, he used to visit the legislators at their respective homes. Such was the degree of his sense of duty and humility. At the same time, he was a very honest and courageous servant of God, always saying the hard truth, including those that are uncomfortable to say,” read the condolence message from Rio.
“In his death, the state has lost a stalwart in the field of Church and public service; and the void created by his death will be difficult to fill. However, we feel comforted in the knowledge that he is now with the Lord, whom he had served faithfully throughout his life.
“I send my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family; and pray that Almighty God grant them solace and strength in their hours of bereavement. May his soul rest in peace,” it added.
Deputy CM Y Patton also expressed sadness over the demise of the Reverend, who he described as a “true dedicated servant of God and a very outspoken revivalist”.
“From a young age he committed his life to take up the cross and carried it till his death. The late Reverend served as pastor in various churches including Wokha Town Baptist Church, Missionary at Large and also Executive Secretary of Lotha Baptist Churches Association from 1975 to 1980,” read the message.
“The Dy.CM is joined by his wife and family in conveying their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace,” it added.
