A fire gutted eight shops at Dimapur’s New Market, destroying mobile shops, a pharmacy and juice shops on Wednesday night

DIMAPUR — A fire gutted at least eight shops in a two-storey commercial building at New Market in Dimapur on Wednesday night.
The Dimapur Central Fire Station received a distress call at around 10.35 pm reporting the fire, which shopkeepers said may have started between 10 pm and 10.30 pm at a juice shop on the ground floor.
Shopkeepers suspected a short circuit, but the cause of the fire had not been confirmed by the Fire department.
Five mobile shops, a pharmacy and two juice shops were destroyed. Goods belonging to street vendors and stored on the ground floor were also damaged.
Four fire tenders from the Central Fire Station and two from the West Fire Station were deployed to douse the blaze. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. No casualties were reported.
Fire personnel also urged business owners to install fire extinguishers to improve preparedness and limit damage in the event of a fire.
