Dimapur, March 11 (EMN): In an unprecedented incident, a total of 45 houses were reportedly razed to ashes at Ward 6, Chumkedima, on Friday night.
Sources informed that 32 thatch houses and 13 petty shops were completely razed to ashes in Chumukedima town Ward 6 in the wee hours on Saturday night.
According Fire Services personnel stationed at Chumukedima, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Although the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, personnel suspected the fire could have started from electric short circuit.
As per the fire personnel, seven fire tenders including three from Chumukedima Fire Station and four from Dimapur were pressed into action till it was brought under control at 4:40 a.m. before it could spread to other areas. No casualties have been reported and the exact property loss could not be ascertained. Following the incident, Parliamentary Secretary of Irrigation and Flood Control, Jacob Zhimomi, visited the area and took stock of the situation besides interacting with affected families and assured relief at the earliest.
Also expressing concern for the students, he said timely assistance will be extended so that normal routine are not affected.
He, however, cautioned to take proper precaution on the usage of domestic appliances at home in order to avoid recurrence of such incidence in future.
