MOKOKCHUNG — The District Magistrate of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, has issued a fresh directive on Monday giving arms licence holders in the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency a final opportunity to deposit their firearms and ammunition at their respective police stations by April 4.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, follows an earlier directive dated March 16, which had required all arms licence holders in the district to surrender their weapons by March 25.
Despite repeated reminders from police stations, several licence holders failed to comply, prompting the district magistrate to grant this last extension.

After reviewing reports from the senior superintendent of police, Mokokchung, and assessing the current situation, the district magistrate stated that any failure to deposit arms and ammunition within the 28-Koridang area poses a serious threat to public peace and the smooth conduct of a free, fair, and peaceful bye-election.
The directive warned that non-compliance by the extended deadline will trigger action under Sections 17 and 22 of the Arms Act, 1959.
In such cases, the defaulting licences will be suspended immediately, and the firearms, ammunition, and licences will be seized by the concerned police stations, it stated.
Given the urgency of the matter, the order has been passed ex parte.
