IMPHAL — A fawn of the Serow (Capricornis rubidus), locally known as Sabeng, has been rescued in Manipur’s Tamenglong district and handed over to the Manipur Zoological Garden, officials said on Friday.

The Serow — listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN — was rescued on November 26 by Keijuilung Pame, son of Arum Pame of Impa village under Tousem sub-division. He handed the animal over to Range Forest Officer (Tousem), A. Promeshwor Singh the following day.

On Friday, the fawn was formally transferred by Divisional Forest Officer (Tamenglong), Kharibam Hitler Singh, along with staff of the Tousem Range, to Dr. L. Saratchandra Singh, Veterinary Officer of the Manipur Zoological Garden.

Forest officials appreciated the timely action of the rescuer and urged the public to support conservation efforts by reporting wildlife sightings or distress cases to the nearest forest authorities.
