
Resource persons with the farmers following the training on
composting and vermicomposting techniques at Beisumpuikam village, Jalukie, on
December 17.
- DIMAPUR — With the aim of promoting sustainability
among farmers, the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) (Vegetable
Crops) Nagaland Centre, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland
University (NU), under the North Eastern Hill (NEH) Plan, in collaboration with
the NEH Component Of Onion And Garlic, Nagaland Centre, conducted a one-day
hands-on training on composting and vermicomposting techniques for vegetable
kitchen gardens on December 17 at Beisumpuikam village, Jalukie, Peren.
- According to an update, technical session I on "Vermicomposting
techniques for vegetable kitchen gardens" was delivered by Bikram, project
assistant, Science and Technology Intervention in North-Eastern Region
(STINER)-Technology Facility Centre (TFC), SAS, NU, where he emphasised the
importance and methodology of vermicomposting.
- The technique, which utilises earthworms to convert organic
waste into nutrient-rich compost, is gaining traction among urban and rural
households for its transformative impact on kitchen gardens, it said.
- In the training, Bikram emphasised the adoption of
vermicomposting techniques, which can significantly contribute to environmental
conservation and food security.
- The technical session was followed by a practical session on
vermicomposting techniques, where the farmers were shown the step-by-step
procedure for vermicomposting. All the participants participated in making
their own vermicompost beds during the session.
- The programme began with a prayer by the pastor of
Beisumpuikam village, followed by a brief introduction by Dr. Moakala
Changkiri, scientist, AICRP (VC) and project incharge of the NEH Component of
Onion and Garlic, SAS, NU.
- This was followed by an interactive session along with
feedback from the farmer participants. All the participants were given
vermicompost, earthworms, agricultural tools, vermibeds, and rabi onion seeds
from ICAR-DOGR, Pune.
- In the wrap-up session, the village chairman, Tadibe,
expressed gratitude on behalf of the community to the AICRP (Vegetable Crops)
and NEH Component of Onion and Garlic, Nagaland Centre, for all the technical
and material support provided. He also assured full cooperation for future
programmes.
