Dimapur, June 20 (EMN): The Phek District Legal Services Authority has launched a campaign to provide legal assistance to families of prisoners. The campaign was launched on June 19 at the district jail of Phek, updates stated.
During the event, members of the legal services gave discourses at the jail about the legal services authority, and schemes and rights of people accused of offence.
Dozhoyi Ciikhamu, assistant jailor of the district jail of Phek, highlighted the legal aid clinic. The updates stated that the inmates of the jail were encouraged to reform and become responsible citizens.
During the programme, Mezivolu T Therieh, chairperson of the Phek legal services, also talked about publicising rights, benefits, and entitlements assured by various schemes and programs.
Therieh was stated to have mentioned an annual report, the ‘Prison Statistics India 2015 published by National Crime Report Bureau (NCRB). Nagaland state has a total inmates population of 499, ranking 27th among the Indian states and Union Territories.
At the national level, the total number of jail inmates in India was 4,19,623 with 4,01,789 males and 17,834 females. Out of the total number of inmates 1,34,168 were convicts and 2,82,076 were under trail prisoners, the updates stated.
Elsewhere, the Wokha District Legal Services Authority also held its first stage of the campaign to provide legal assistance to family members of prisoners. The programme at Wokha was conducted on June 18 at the district jail of Wokha. Members of the services interacted with the jail inmates, the updates stated.
