KIPHIRE — A granary in Pongren village under Longmatra block in Kiphire district was damaged by a huge oak tree which fell on it due to strong wind on May 28 night between 11:30 pm and 12 midnight.
In the incident, harvested crops including 45 tins of millets and 58 tins of maize were destroyed belonging to a farmer family of 8 members whose livelihood depended on farming.
A VDB secretary of the village informed that most of the standing crops were washed away by the heavy rain and wind.
"Everyone in the village shared the pain of the affected family and our community will help rebuild the granary for the unfortunate family in sometime sooner," said the VDB secretary of Pongren village.
Meanwhile, the village community has requested the government department to extend assistance to the affected family, whose food stock reserved for the current year has been destroyed.
It may be noted here that Pongren village community conserved oak trees in and around the village jurisdiction in order to prevent properties from heavy winds since it is located on a hill side which is frequented by strong wind.
