Dimapur, Dec. 22 (EMN): Dimapur Police on Wednesday informed that extortion cases had dropped in Dimapur in the last four months following the implementation of the District Action Plan.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday in Dimapur, Commissioner of Police Rothihu Tetseo and DCP (Crime) Bharat Laxman Markad informed that the city police are putting extra enforcement to control extortion and illegal taxation activities under the Dimapur Police Action Plan, while the traffic police are taking efforts to prevent accidents especially on the highway.
As per the Police report, theft registered the highest cases with a total of 280, out of which 83 persons were arrested from January till Dec. 21 2021; second was extortion with 98 cases, out of which 138 persons were arrested; and third fell under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act with 38 cases registered, out of which 56 persons were arrested.
The DCP maintained that the crime rate had come down to 738 cases in the district, compared to 1003 cases in 2015, before the Police Commissionerate system was introduced.
He informed that 857 cases were registered in 2020, which means this saw a decrease of 13.88% while kidnapping and abduction cases increased by 26%.
He attributed the split of factions and relaxations of lockdown measures among the reasons that contributed to the increase in cases of kidnapping and abduction.
During the same period, theft cases decreased from 313 to 280, extortion cases increased from 88 to 98, cases related to drugs increased from 25 to 38, cases related to Arms Act increased from 47 to 58, and cases under Foreigners Act increased from two to six.
According to the DCP, the decrease of theft cases can be attributed to the implementation of District Action Plan and increased patrolling among other factors. He mentioned that though extortion cases had increased compared to 2020, the spike was in the beginning of 2021 and after the Action Plan was put in place, cases reduced.
Dimapur Police also reported that 71 cases were registered and 93 persons arrested in connection with the NLTP Act/Drugs and Cosmetics (DC) and NDPS Act from January till Dec. 21. A total of 158 cases have been registered and 197 persons arrested under the extortion and Arms Act cases.
