Mokokchung, March 10 (EMN): As part of the Swachh Shakti Week, an exchange programme on making useful products from waste materials was organised with members of Mission Clean Drive from Ungma village and Changtongya womenfolk on March 10 at the community hall in Changtongya village. The programme was organised by PHED, Mokokchung division, and sponsored by WSSO, Kohima.
Divisional Executive Engineer, PHED, N Yanger Pongen said Swachh Shakti Week is being observed by emphasising on women’s role and contribution towards cleaner India.
The engineer added that flagship programmes and central developmental projects cannot be successfully implemented without the contribution of women. He therefore said the Government of India has given prime focus on women empowerment starting from grass-root level.
Pongen also challenged the womenfolk from Changtongya village to exhibit and infused new ideas from the things they learn from the exchange programme. He also assured that the department is ready to provide assistance to the various women groups for their voluntary contribution towards cleaner society.
SDO, Masachuba, said the programme was about practical management of solid waste materials and converting it into useful products to make the houses and streets look beautiful. He remarked that ‘waste is gold if managed properly.’
In the practical session, members of Mission Clean Drive from Ungma village consisting more than 100 volunteers imparted various training on converting waste into daily use products such as decorated flowers, vase, doormat, mat etc from plastic bottles, ropes, papers, old clothes, and towels etc.
Appreciating the department and womenfolk from Ungma for imparting training, chairman of Changtongya village council said such innovative initiation would not only reduce the waste materials in the area but transform the community toward a healthy environment.
