Imphal, Sep. 7 (EMN): Arjuna Award winner Subedar Laishram Devendro Singh was felicitated by the Defence Forces Ex-Servicemen community under Armed Forces Ex-Servicemen Association Manipur (AFESAM) in a glittering ceremony at Koirengei, Old airfield in Imphal on Thursday.
Singh was lauded for his achievements and wishes were extended to him for upcoming Olympics during the day’s gathering which was attended by ex-Servicemen representatives from Churachandpur, Senapati/Mao, Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Chandel.
Lt Gen KH Singh (Retd) in his speech said he knew Subedar Devendro Singh since he was a young boy, when he was recruited in the Army and he has kept close watch on him for all these years, guiding him whenever required. Lt Gen Himalay said he has full faith that Subdedar Devendro Singh will be a strong medal contender in the upcoming Olympics, he said that Manipur will turn out to be the trend setter for India’s Olympic dreams. He said that Manipur which is ethnically and culturally so diverse, the Ex-Servicemen community provides it a unique unifying platform.
Sub Devendro said that there was a time when nobody knew him in Manipur, today everyone in the country knows him and he will never forget that it was only due to the help and guidance provided to him by Indian Army. He said that presently he is targeting Common Wealth Games and will be working hard to do well in Olympics. Speaking on the boxing scene in Manipur, he said that the boxing federation of India is doing a great job in Manipur, and organising tours for Manipuri Boxers thereby giving them great exposure.
Col IS Chanam, President AFESAM (Retd) and Lt Col L Manongba, Gen Secy AFESAM (Retd) later thanked the Ex-Servicemen community for the event and wished Sub L Devendro Singh for future endeavours.
In another development, a local youth from Bishnupur has been selected by North East United Football Club (ISL) for further training at their football academy in Shillong. Master Henson Yumnam, son of Yumnam Mani Singh was part of Army football coaching camp in Bishnupur since Jun 2017 Army is committed to nurturing the talent and groom budding sports persons by continuing the coaching camp. Hemson’s parents expressed their appreciation for Army’s initiative which gave an opportunity to their son hone and showcase his football skills.
