DIMAPUR — Eri silk continues to be one of the most extensively cultivated varieties in Nagaland's sericulture sector, with 15,280 acres dedicated to its cultivation. This marks an upward trend compared to 2021-2022, when the cultivation area stood at 14,650 acres.
As per the Nagaland Statistical Handbook 2024, published by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, the production of disease-free layings (DFLS) reached 59.92 lakh units for the year 2023-2024, up from 49.12 lakh units in 2021-2022.
The total output of empty cocoons reached 446.44 metric tonnes, while spun silk production amounted to 379.92 metric tonnes and Eri pupae production was recorded at 1,710 metric tonnes for the year 2023-2024.
The Muga silk stood in second place with 2,151 acres under cultivation, marking an upward trend compared to 2021-2022, when the cultivation area stood at 1,745 acres.
During the year 2023-2024, a total of 0.315 lakh disease-free layings (DFLS) were produced and the reelable cocoon production reached 10.39 lakh, while the total raw silk output from Muga silk amounted to 0.24 metric tonnes.
The total area under Mulberry silk cultivation in Nagaland was 835 acres in 2023-2024, marking a significant decline from 1,585 acres of cultivated area as compared to 2021-2022.
The total production of DFLS stood at 0.88 lakh and the reelable cocoon production reached 39.25 metric tonnes, while the total output of raw silk stood at 4.31 metric tonnes.
The Oak Tasar silk remains the lowest in terms of total cultivation area in Nagaland, with 315 acres under cultivation for the year 2023-2024, which shows a declining trend as compared to 432 acres of cultivated area during the year 2021-2022.
While the production of DFLS stood at 0.10 lakh and reelable cocoon production stood at 3.33 lakh, the production of raw silk remains at 0.081 metric tonnes for the year 2023-2024.
