Imphal, Feb.10: The 5 day 14th Director General Assam Rifles Sentinel Cup, State Equestrian Championship commenced at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest polo ground in the world with a colourful function on Friday. More than 100 riders from 12 teams of different clubs under Manipur Equestrian Association (MEA) are participating in the championship which is being organised by 6 Assam Rifles and will continue till February 14. Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) Major General Virendra Singh attended the inaugural ceremony as the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion General Virendra highlighted the dedication of MEA to encourage the sport of polo and preserve the rich heritage and sporting culture of Manipur. He also re-affirmed the commitment of Assam Rifles to promote the sports and support the talented riders. President, Dr S Joykumar Singh of MEA, President S Buddachandra Singh of Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Secretary Organising Committee Dr Th Chaa Mangilal and Commander 9 Sector Assam Rifles Brigadier JS Bainsla also attended the inaugural function as presidium members. Friday saw tent pegging & show jumping competition for both individual and team category wherein Th Santosh of Chingheihunba club bagged the first position with 31 points while his club mate Th Ratan got the second position with 29 points in men’s category.
