Dimapur, April 9 (EMN): Environmentalists namely Ronika Miachieo and Amos Ezung conducted a cleanliness awareness programme at Nagaland gate in Dimapur on April 9.
Speaking at the programme, Ezung informed the shopkeepers and residents of the area to keep their surroundings clean and not dumb garbage on the roads. He warned that defaulters would be fined or called to their office for penalty.
He has advised the residents to not burn or bury wastes or throw garbage in the drainages, but segregate the wet and dry wastes and keep it in the bins for the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) workers to collect on the following morning.
He also advised the tobacco chewers not to spit on the roads or litter the roads. He stated that defaulters would be penalized as per the Waste Management Rule of 2016. He added that the local authorities are responsible for the development of infrastructure for collection, storage, segregation, transformation, processing and disposal of solid waste.
While mentioning that the municipal council is working tirelessly to keep the town clean, Miachieo said the public should not always blame them as it is the residents who are dumping waste in open areas. She also stressed on the segregation of wet and dry wastes.
She further asked the participants to work together with her for waste management and advised them to tie up with the council and to plant more trees.
Zarenthung, general secretary of Zakiesato Colony Council, informed that they would be conducting surprise checking once in a while and strict action be taken against defaulters.
Mhanbemo Kikon, general secretary of the Public Ground Council, also requested the residents and shop owners not to throw garbage around their surroundings.
