DIMAPUR — The Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students' Union (ENSSU) successfully concluded the first phase of its education tour (tenure 2024-26) from June 7 to the 11th.
In a press release, the ENSSU informed that the education tour was conducted to “evaluate and enhance the educational infrastructure” and teaching staff within its jurisdiction.
During the tour, the union observed that all schools were operating smoothly. Among the institutions visited, Government High School (GHS) Sitimi and Government High School Phisami, were noted as the best-performing schools.
However, the ENSSU said that the tour revealed significant gaps in staffing. GHS Sitimi has shortage of teaching faculties, while GHS Phisami is in need of an English teacher, it said.
The union urged the department concerned to promptly appoint qualified teachers to address the educational challenges faced by these schools.
“Further, it's surprising to learn the concern teacher namely Shunung Tikhir posted at GMS Sukiur-B failed to fulfilled her duties since her appointment, despite repeated interventions by the local union and the in-charge teacher,” it alleged.
The union appealed the Education department to address the matter expeditiously.
Beyond educational institutions, the ENSSU representatives also visited several local administrative offices, including EAC office, RD, CDPO, and PHC in Sitimi town.
It highlighted that besides the ADC, CHC in Seyochung and EAC office in Sitimi, and PHC Sitimi, the remaining offices were found closed during the visit.
Pointing out that PHC Sitimi is facing significant challenges due to the absence of an ambulance driver and a doctor on study leave, the union requested the Medical department to assign additional staff from the nearest hospital to PHC Sitimi, to address the urgent issue.
Further, ENSSU raised concerns about the absence of staffs in their respective stations and emphasised the need for timely appointment of designated officials to these offices.
“Proper staffing would greatly benefit the local indigenous communities by ensuring the effective functioning of educational and administrative services. ENSSU hopes for swift action to address these issues, ensuring that the educational needs of the students are met and that administrative offices are adequately staffed to serve the community effectively,” the union stated.
