Dimapur, March 11
The Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO), apex body of Eastern Nagaland, along with Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO) and Eastern Naga Students' Federation (ENSF) visited the affected areas of Tuensang incident which occurred over land dispute between Kuthur village, Yahkor village (both Yimchunger villages), and Chendang village (Chang village). The team led by the new ENPO President, S.Khoiwang visited the victims’ families and the displaced people who are camped in temporary makeshifts and handed over some donations which were collected from the well-wishers. The team observed that the situation is slowly improving after the signing of bond of peace agreement at Longleng on February 24 to which the ENPO has thanked the CKS and YTC for upholding the agreement by controlling their respective public.
The organization also observed that the victim family members and displaced masses were ready to forgive the perpetrators and yearning for peace and wanting to resettle in their homes, and for which they (victims and the displaced) strongly urged the government for an early settlement of the issue.
The ENPO observed that the unfortunate conflict could have been avoided had the government tackled and addressed the situation seriously in the initial stages - in the month of August, 2014, or during simmering tensions in and around Chendang village and C. Saddle areas.
“The present government too being bogged down in the tussle of leadership in the State had also not taken the issue seriously when the situation seriously resurged in the months of November and December last, and whereby some precious lives had been unfortunately and tragically lost and properties damaged since then.”
Meanwhile, the ENPO thanked the present Tuensang district administration led by the O.C and district police for their sincere efforts to bring normalcy in the region, and further requested to continue to put extra efforts for bringing peaceful and lasting atmosphere at the earliest.
March 5 Incident: ENPO shocked
The Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) has expressed shock over the ‘shameful rape’ of one Naga girl (student) by one late Syed Farid Khan, followed by the gruesome killing of the accused in the most brutishness and barbaric manner.
“While rape is condemnable as a serious offence and a crime both morally and legally, it is contemporarily and unfortunately occurring routinely in and around the State and the rest of the country.”
ENPO said, by traditions and customs, Nagas are conventionally indifferent to rapes, and hence should be dealt firmly both morally and legally.
ENPO also equally regretted at the manner in which the intolerant and frenzy mob took law into their hands and broke into Dimapur Central Jail where the accused was forcibly dragged out, stripped naked and lynched in full public view including innocent school and college students, both girls and boys, which could have been avoided, and who otherwise also deserved a fair trial as per due procedure.
The ENPO while extending deep condolences to the bereaved family members urged the government to find out the facts, deliver justice and restore normalcy at the earliest.
Further, the ENPO appealed to all non-Nagas irrespective of religious and cultural backgrounds, residing in Nagaland, to feel safe and secure. It however said, as constitutionally mandatory, all non-Nagas fellow Indians must ensure possession of qualified documents (lLPs) as may be required by administrative and legal norms and provisions, which is not a privilege for illegal migrants (foreigners) in the State.
