Dimapur, May 5
The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) along with all its 6 federating tribal units, Chang Khulie Setshang, Khiamniungan Tribal Council, Konyak Union, Phom Peoples’ Council, United Sangtam Likhum Pumji, Yimchunger Tribal Council, Frontal organisations, Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have jointly condemned the May 3 incident near Changlangshu village under Mon district where a group of Assam Rifles and Territorial Army personnel were ambushed killing 8 on the spot and injuring several others.
The incident is contrary to the 18th December Tuensang Resolution, which was based on popular public prayer and demand for peace and tranquillity within ENPO jurisdiction, said a statement jointly issued by presidents of the 9 orgnisations.
The statement mentioned that the ENPO on behalf of the public of Eastern Nagaland had appealed the NSCN(K) for the extension of cease-fire with the GoI which was based on the sentiments and wishes of the people, but not honoured and respected.
The ENPO also maintained that no political movement can be devoid of public prayer and support.
“It is also a matter of shame that the incident occurred on Sunday, which is a sacred day for Christians, keeping in mind that Nagaland is a declared Christian state by both the public and all Naga political groups.”
The statement also mentioned that the abrogation of the ceasefire was devoid of public support and hence the ENPO appealed to the security forces to equally honour the sentiments of public for peace and tranquillity where unnecessary harassment and hardships on the innocent public should be avoided. While condemning the killing of those jawans, the ENPO also conveyed its deep condolences to the bereaved family members.
