IMPHAL — A person described by Manipur Police as a "suspected militant" was killed in an encounter with security forces in Manipur's Churachandpur district, while a student body claimed the deceased was an unarmed civilian.
According to Manipur Police, the encounter took place between Molphei and Songkong villages under Henglep subdivision during an operation by a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Army.
Quoting information received from the Assam Rifles, police said one suspected militant was killed during the encounter. An AK-47 rifle, magazines, ammunition, explosives and other incriminating items were reportedly recovered from the spot.
In a post on X, Manipur Police stated: "During the encounter, one suspected militant was killed. One AK-47 rifle, along with magazines, ammunition, explosives and other incriminating items, was recovered from the spot. A case has been registered in this connection and further investigation is in progress."
As of the time of filing this report, the Assam Rifles had not issued an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur district, identified the deceased as Lenminsang of Kolchung village.
Condemning the incident, the organisation alleged that Lenminsang was an unarmed civilian with no involvement in any armed activity and demanded the registration of an FIR, an independent investigation and prosecution of those found responsible.
The claims made by the KSO could not be independently verified.
