Wokha, Jan. 30 (EMN): The 4th Late Emi Merry (IAS) memorial women’s football and volleyball championship organised by the Wokha District Women Sports Association (WDWSA) kicked started on Tue. Jan. 30 at the Wokha local ground with Y. Sachio Ovung, director, department of economics & statistics, government of Nagaland as the chief guest.
The chief guest while speaking at the function encouraged the players to excel through sports, where he said that the players wearing the uniform itself indicates that they are disciplined.
The enthusiast spectators cannot simply enter the ground to play, because certain rules restrict them of which the players are not. He further advised the player to maintain the sports spirit. Nagas are not lagging behind in sports arena when considered to Dr. T. Ao, who was the first Indian Olympic football captain.
Thanking the WDWSA officials for organising the women tournament in the district with a vision of encouraging women through sports, he declared the tournament open. Eight football and 12 volleyball teams are vying for the championship which is based on league matches.
Late Emi Merry (IAS) popularly known as Nee Shitiri was the second daughter of late Yankhorao Lotha and Lokyungu Tsopoe of Pangti village, Wokha district born on Mar. 22, 1955. She completed her schooling from St. Mary’s Convent Shillong, with a first division graduated from St. Mary’s College, Shillong, with honours in English, and went on to complete her MA in English from NEHU Shillong. She subsequently qualified for the IPS and the allied services. During her tenure as Secretary (co-operation), she and her husband met their untimely death in the Indian Airlines air crash at Imphal on Aug. 16, while returning to Dimapur.

Football - Suren won by eight goals beating Midland while Koio won the second match over N.Longidang by two goals.
Volleyball – Forest Rising Star won the first match, beating Tsumang and Saron Home Maker ‘A ‘defeated Saron Home Maker ‘B’.
