Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, has become the world's most followed person on the platform, dethroning former US President Barack Obama. As per their Twitter profiles, Musk has 133,068,709 followers while Obama has 133,042,819 followers. Musk's acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion last year has significantly helped him gain a larger following, with his follower count surpassing 100 million in June 2021 and continuing to grow since then.
Justin Bieber, with over 113 million followers, and Katy Perry, with over 108 million followers, are in the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Obama mainly uses his Twitter account for professional purposes, like promoting important causes and highlighting his work as the US President. On the other hand, Musk tweets about almost all trending topics worldwide. Despite their different tweeting habits, both have massive followings on the platform.
Musk experimented with his Twitter account in February by making it private to test whether it could improve his reach. He later removed the private setting after receiving complaints from users about their tweets not being seen by as many people as before.
"Made my account private until tomorrow morning to test whether you can see my private tweets more than my public ones," he posted.
Musk's tweeting habits, which include sharing memes and communicating changes to the platform, have helped him attract a massive following. He famously asked his fans in a Twitter poll whether he should buy Twitter or not and needless to say, Musk ended up buying the platform in a deal worth $44 billion. His popularity has grown significantly in recent months, making him the most followed person on Twitter.
