Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award
Dimapur, Nov. 24 (EMN): Eight Sümi women who ‘secured MBBS seats’ in government colleges in 2018 were recognised for their achievement during the first annual Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award ceremony on November 24 at Hotel De Oriental Grand, in Kohima.
The eight recipients of the Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award for 2018 are Mughatoli Shikhu Swu; Khelito K Awomi; Felika Y Chishi; Loinoli X Yeptho; Vipitoli H Kiho; Limugha S Kiho; Akina P Jimo; and Kavitoli I Aye.
Theyiesinuo Keditsu, trustee of the Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation issued a press release on Saturday informing about the event.
The Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award is stated to be an initiative of Dr. Toshevi Keditsu Sema, and officiated by Dr. K and T Keditsu Foundation in collaboration with the Sümi Totimi Hoho of Nagaland.
Dr. Toshevi Keditsu Sema nee Chishi completed her MBBS at Gauhati Medical College in 1997 to become the first female doctor from among the Sümi tribe, the press release stated.
“This award is presented annually to Sümi women who qualify to study graduate medical course (MBBS) in government colleges through National Eligibility cum
Entrance Test and comprises a cash prize of rupees one lakh only. Driven by the conviction that education is a woman’s greatest wealth, Toshevi Keditsu Sema started this award to encourage Sümi women to take up medical studies,” the press release stated.
During the event, Dr. Hokishe Kiho spoke on behalf of the awardees and their families, thanking Dr. Toshevi Keditsu and the foundation for their foresight and concern for Sümi women and the Sümi people in general, the updates stated.
On behalf of the Sümi Totimi Hoho, its president Khegholi K Chophy was stated to have said that Dr. Toshevi reaped the fruits her father Lukhashe Chishi had sown and that she was carrying his vision forward through this initiative. She urged all parents to encourage their children to study hard for a better future.
Further, Ghovili K Achumi, president of the Kohima Sümi Totimi Hoho, was stated to have said that working with the foundation for this cause was a delightful experience.
She expressed hope that the award would play a role in increasing the number of Sümi women in the field of medicine.
