Kohima Nov. 23 (EMN): “Education is not only about putting things inside (feeding) the mind of a child, but all about bringing out the latent talents of each child,” said Chanda Sahi, administrator of Joyance Pre-School, Kohima, during the parents’ day celebration on November 23.
Observing with concern on how children are brought up in the Naga society, Sahi noted that children are brought up with ‘lots of shame’ with lots of ‘dos and don’ts’ as parents are more concern on what the society and the people will say.
This type of parenting, she said, makes a child to develop a very low self esteem and when he/she grows up and let loose, is made to face lots of problems and difficulties.
Stating that children are the reflection of the home and school, Sahi maintained that both the teachers and parents should work hand in hand towards nurturing and bring up the child to be more expressive, encourage them to be curious and inquisitive.
Children, she asserted, must be nurtured with proper care and guidance to enable them grow up with high self-esteem so that they can someday become productive men and women in the society.
Also advising the parents, she pointed that parents shouldn’t be too concern about what society will be say but rather provide children a conducive environment for them to grow and develop to the fullest physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.
She further stated that with the change of time, it is time for parents to relook into their parenting style, identify the talent of their children, give space and freedom for them to develop and grow accordingly and not bind them with too much of ‘don’ts’.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Vekhozo Swuro thanked the administrator and the teachers for their relentless efforts towards nurturing and moulding the students at such a young age and instilling sense of purpose in them.
The celebration was marked by presentation of songs and dances by the students from play-group to UKG titled ‘Change my heart,’ ‘I won’t worry,’ ‘Bom diggy diggy’ etc.
Joyance Preschool was established in 2003 as a single branch, which today has grown to other branches. It has also introduced inclusive education for children with special needs.
