India Northeast Tribal Community Welfare Society, under the aegis of its education wing Libra Consultancy, Notun Bosti, Dimapur have been creating awareness and inspecting universities particularly in education field since 2008. Our main objective is creating awareness to tribal students’ community about universities and colleges, affiliations, recognitions issues, agencies duping the students in various education areas etc for professional studies outside the state.
However, despite such awareness been spread in different ways by our society, many untoward incidents took place and many students have been duped in many ways by different agencies as we have all witnessed such cases in the last 5-6 years.
Past experiences have shown how many organizations , from outside state came with the false promise of providing help to tribal students and youth with different vocational training, career, job opportunities, teachers training etc but remain only at lip service and no real work done but made profits for themselves only at the cost of our tribal people.
During our recent visit to universities and colleges in North India, we encountered a so called Northeast group/organization from our neighboring states, who were formerly organizing education fairs by bringing disreputed institutes but since the education fairs did not materialize, they have change their business trend from education fairs to seminars for their monetary benefit. This group is joined by some former college representatives of North India who were kicked out of their work. In order to organize this so called combined seminar which is tentatively scheduled to be held in second or third week of November in Kohima and Dimapur, they planned to collaborate with some local student bodies, school authorities,reputed organizations and agencies to easily arrange these seminars in order to pull and get the confidence of the students .
In the name of education seminar they are going to bring some college representatives from North and south India who will only introduce their college and courses for about 10-15 minutes each. While this group will collect detailed data of students and parents and give it to the colleges in return for money (Rs. 1 lakh per 1 seminar from each college), so as to enable the colleges to continuously contact the students for admission into their colleges after their final exam results are declared. Some of this disrepute colleges and universities though with high infrastructures ( engg, agri & allied courses & other professional courses) are on the verge of closing down due to lack of students and faculties, library and other facilities as per government orders and so are in dire need of enrollment to save their colleges .
Without knowing the status of these colleges/universities some gullible students and parents will be duped to take admission just by showing their courses/infrastructure and other facilities, but students must remain cautious as more than 800 professional colleges are going to close down by government since they do not have the mandatory requirements plus percentage of students intake. It’s a fact that good and proper colleges does not require publicity to get students, but only new ones and those which are about to be closed down are marketing themselves. For the sake of publicity, some colleges are planning to hold various competitions in schools for students and teachers and give awards. These gimmicks are not based on education and career development but just new tricks of trade to get students for admission in their colleges.
This group will be offering gifts and benefits etc to Principals/ heads of different schools so as to send students for the seminars and will be going to schools, colleges, coaching centres, and ask the students to attend these seminars, so we appeal to the authorities of school, colleges and coaching centres ,agencies etc not to entertain such activities as it is not for the welfare of students.
Our society has also been invited to work with them for this seminars and competitions by offering financial shares, but we refuse as it is not for the benefit of the tribal students but purely in the interest of the group. There is apprehension that there will be a great flow of different admission process for 2018-19 admission session like free education schemes, scholarships for ST students, tribal concessions, education fairs etc for these colleges/universities with high infrastructure but poor status and some of which are going to close down by government in different parts of India. We request our state government to have stringent measures like some other neighboring states, whereby such unnecessary publicity of colleges, universities etc are strictly monitored and restricted, so that unrecognized and non- functioning colleges, universities will not lead our tribal students astray.
Established with the objective of creating awareness on any dubious issues, we advised the students and parents, heads of schools, colleges, student bodies etc to remain aware and vigilant as this so called seminars are not directed towards the welfare of the students but for the benefit of that particular group only. Anybody who deal with such groups should take responsibility of any untoward incidents in the future and not play blame game and washed off their hands after earning.
Many agencies flows into Kohima and Dimapur for admission related issues and duped a lot of tribal students, just like the “illegal migrants” flowing in Nagaland to make their life . If these two districts can be properly regulated at the earliest ,than such cheating and duping cases can be stopped in spreading to the other districts before any more damage is done.
So we particularly appeal student bodies like Angami Students Union Kohima and Dimapur Naga Students Union and other organizations, working in the interest of tribal students to strictly monitor such activities in their jurisdictions. At the same time we are ready to offer our professional assistance to any student bodies especially in spreading awareness relating to the tribal students. Our society is purely against these kinds of spurious activities and advised all public to remain vigilant and alert for their welfare so that no student and parents is victimized in future.
