KOHIMA, JUNE 9
Christian Higher Secondary School of Dimapur was the host of a recent seminar that a local career resource group and a department of the government of Nagaland organized this week as a part of initiative to make educational institutions–conceptually–‘career smart’ schools.
Local resource group Career CliniQ and the government’s directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training conducted two days of seminar on careers, for the parents of the school’s students on June 8 and the 9th, in that order. The seminars were conducted with the theme ‘Ignite the spirit of science’, a slogan to suggest encouraging students to go for a career in the sciences. The events highlighted the various modern career avenues available for students who choose science as the foundation for their academic targets. Various government schemes and scholarships available to students were also highlighted to the parents during the seminars. Experts in vocational careers from Delhi and Guwahati in Assam addressed the two-day event.
Speaking during one of the seminars, the director of Career CliniQ, Dr. Anirban Choudhury brought to light t the parents the various government job opportunities available in both the center and at the states.
Likewise, Prof. Biswaroop Bhattacharyya, a senior trainer imparting skill education for the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development in Hyderabad spoke to the parents. In his speech, Prof. Bhattacharyya dispelled ‘fear’ for mathematics and science that local students ‘suffer from’.
The event also marked the beginning of an annual and round-the-year career counseling activity in the school as announced by the principal of the institution, S Moatemsu Walling. In association with Career CliniQ, the school will regularly issue notifications about various scholarships and entrances opportunities.
“We shall initiate the process of having a career club in our school under the aegis and back-end support of Career CliniQ. Volunteers of the club would try to bring about a culture of career discussion in the atmosphere which as of now is only reduced to entertainment alone,” academic coordinator Patricia remarked.
Also, the parents and students were informed that a dedicated ‘career helpline’ number, Facebook ID and website were being put up in the school for the public. Any student having any query related to careers ‘at any point of time’ can seek answers over the phone, email, Facebook or the website itself once they were functional.
Jitu Chandra Bora, in-charge of Dimapur operations of Career CliniQ, also said that the nongovernmental organization was ‘so much encouraged’ to see the “pro-activeness” of the schools in Dimapur in encouraging career related activities in their institutional scheme of things.
“It is worth mentioning that Christian Higher Secondary School is not only encouraging the traditional pen and paper method of learning, but also inspiring students to adopt the digital way of learning, including the use of the Smart Tutor,” principal S Moatemsu Walling said. The principal has stressed the need for the school “to keep pace with time and move neck to neck with rest of India rather than lagging behind and following all the time.”
Walling also expressed hope that the initiative would bring a positive impact to help students with resolving their various career-related dilemmas.
