Dimapur, Dec. 29 (EMN): A two-day silver jubilee celebration of the East Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union (EDSSU) held at East Dimapur Sumi Baptist Church, Purana Bazaar, on the theme “Redefining generation” culminated on December 29.
Addressing the culmination programme as the chief guest on December 29, former MLA Azheto Zhimomi exhorted the students to work together as one and shun tribalism and move forward for the betterment of the Sumi community.
Reminding the youngsters that Sumi community are warriors, Zhimomi implored upon them not to lose their identity and culture and also to uphold their mother tongue.
EDSSU president Kanato S Awomi, in his address, highlighted that EDSSU present team initiated cleanliness drive in the East Dimapur jurisdiction and upgraded the Government High School, Purana Bazaar to Higher Secondary. Awomi also informed that the union would be providing free coaching for the Sumi students preparing for High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams in the month of January and February.
Secretary of finance department and land resource department, Kikheto Y Sema, speaker of the silver jubilee celebration on December 28, articulated that redefining a generation would mean changing oneself in every means from bad to good. “Change in dress, fashion, mobile phones to name a few only do not represent change but the real change should be positive in one’s attitude, mannerism, love and respect for one another,” addressed Sema emphasising on the jubilee theme.
The speaker called upon the Nagas irrespective of their geographical locations and community to remain as one emotionally and support each other. “Nagas are a small group of people and we should not disintegrate amongst ourselves but remain strongly bonded in all means possible,” he said.
He also described the political crisis that had enveloped the tenure of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly as “most unfortunate” and added that every individual should be held responsible for the mess instead of blaming only the politicians.
