Dimapur, August 13 : The Eastern Nagaland Women Organization (ENWO) has cautioned against granting bail to a person accused of rape in Kohima on August 11. The ENWO issued a note on Saturday denouncing the alleged rape of a minor girl allegedly by one Meyikumzuk Jamir, said to be a 20-year old man.
The alleged incident happened at Officer’s Hill in Kohima town on the 11th, the organization said.
“The ENWO expresses its outrage at the abhorrent act committed against the young girl; this horrific and ungodly assault is a shame and blot on the well being of women everywhere, it raises questions on the safety and security of women,” the organization stated. “Therefore, the ENWO urges upon the law enforcing agencies to take stringent action against the perpetrator as per the law and should not be granted bail at any cost but should be given a befitting punishment.”
The organization has also expressed support to the representation to the principal district and sessions judge by the ENWO’s federating unit, the khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam of Kohima.
A delayed report on Saturday from the Khiamniungan Union of Kohima, Khiamniungan Students Union of Kohima and Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam of Kohima said that the girl was a 15-year old. A joint press release from said organizations stated that on the night of the 11th, the girl had gone to a nearby shop. She was ‘dragged forcefully by the rapist and took her to his place. The girl tried to escape and picked a stone for her safety however, the accused threatened the girl.’ The girl managed to reach home around 10.00 pm and reported the incident to her guardian, the statement said.
“The Khiamniungan Union Kohima, Khiamniungan Students Union Kohima and Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam Kohima vehemently condemn the inhuman act and termed such barbaric, bestiality not just unlawful but it is unnatural and a highest degree of crime,” the press release stated. “The union further appeals the law enforcing authority to award befitting punishment as per the law and to make the case a non-bail able offence.”
