DIMAPUR — The East Dimapur Town Council has warned livestock owners against allowing cattle and other animals to stray, graze or remain unattended on national and state highways and other major roads within its jurisdiction.

In a public notice, the council stated that stray animals posed a serious risk to road users, potentially leading to accidents, traffic disruptions, loss of life and damage to property.

The notice was issued in compliance with directions of the Nagaland government and the Supreme Court of India concerning the removal and regulation of stray animals on highways, the council added.

It directed animal owners to ensure that livestock in their care do not obstruct roads or create hazards for motorists and other road users. Those moving animals along or across highways have also been asked to keep them under proper control and supervision and, where possible, use designated crossing points or safer routes.

The council said it would coordinate with the departments and authorities concerned to identify and remove stray animals from vulnerable and high-risk stretches.

It also urged residents to report stray animals and other animal-related road hazards to the authorities so that prompt action could be taken.

Those found violating the directions may face action under applicable rules and laws, the council warned.
