NEW DELHI — Cheers and slogans filled the area outside Delhi University's Arts Faculty on Saturday as ABVP supporters gathered to celebrate the outfit's victory in three of the four central panel posts in the DUSU elections.
Supporters waved party flags and threw pamphlets into the air as groups gathered outside the faculty following the declaration of results, with celebrations continuing through the afternoon at the North Campus venue.
The Delhi High Court on Friday directed candidates and student organisations to refrain from taking out victory processions on roads, campuses and hostels after the results were declared.
The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the posts of president, secretary and joint secretary, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member who was denied a ticket by the Congress-affiliated student outfit, won the vice-president's post.
ABVP's Yash Dabas defeated NSUI's Vijay Shankar Meena in the presidential contest by 2,053 votes, polling 24,576 votes.
Shokeen secured the vice-president's post with 30,615 votes, defeating ABVP's Ishu Maurya and NSUI's Vir Chatrath by a margin of more than 13,700 votes.
The result marked a setback for the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI), which drew a blank despite its candidates putting up close contests for some of the posts.
The ABVP retained the three posts it had won in the 2025 DUSU elections -- president, secretary and joint secretary -- while the vice-president's post, held by the NSUI last year, went to an independent candidate.
In the secretary's contest, the ABVP candidate polled 21,650 votes, while the NSUI candidate secured 14,869 votes.
For the joint secretary's post, ABVP's Lakshya Raj Singh won with 16,615 votes, followed by Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha's Vishesh Yadav with 15,778 votes. NSUI candidate Gopal Chaudhary finished third with 15,206 votes.
