Dimapur, Oct. 5 (EMN):
Dimapur witnessed a sea of people on Wednesday as hundreds of devotees stepped out to immerse the idols of goddess Durga on the last day of the 5-day Durga Puja celebration.

Dozens of goddess Durga idols were immersed in Dhansiri river in Dimapur on Wednesday. The procession for the ritual started as early as 7 am and continued until all the idols were immersed in the evening, said a source from the Dimapur Bengali community.

He also informed that the Dimapur district administration had provided security for all the 41 pandals (marquees) erected in the city for the Durga Puja celebration, as well as for the immersion of the idols.

The day ended with the burning of Ravana’s image after the completion of the idol immersion rituals.

Ritual of Sindoor Khela

Sindoor Khela, the source said, is another ritual which is performed by women, particularly on the last day of the Durga Puja celebration when the Durga idol is taken for immersion.

‘It is a celebration that women participate but is not compulsory. Women play with vermilion by applying it on each other before the idol immersion with prayers for good health and prosperity,’ he added.
