DIMAPUR — Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) President Zasivikho Zakiesato has questioned the effectiveness of Nagaland's long-standing liquor prohibition policy, Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, stating that despite years of discussions and debates, it has yielded little tangible result.
Responding to queries on Tuesday regarding the reported sale of alcohol during a sporting event at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium within the Police Complex, Zakiesato remarked that the incident has raised serious concerns and deserved public discussion. He added that prohibition appears to exist only on paper.
He pointed out that it has been 36 years since prohibition was introduced in the state, questioning how long the public could continue to "live as hypocrites" and urging people to reflect on whether the state is truly living up to the values it professes as a Christian society.

The DUCCF President reiterated his view that the state should re-examine its prohibition policy while simultaneously strengthening efforts to combat drug abuse and social problems affecting the younger generation. He noted that under existing laws, the Excise department is responsible for enforcing prohibition regulations, yet alcohol remains openly available throughout Nagaland despite the ban.
Zakiesato also expressed concern over growing substance abuse among the youth, pointing to recent incidents highlighted on social media involving young people struggling with addiction. He called upon churches, non-governmental organisations, and community organisations to take a more active role in addressing drug abuse through counselling, rehabilitation, and social support.

Responding to a question regarding the third accused in a recent assault case, who serves as a gaon bura (GB) of Residency Colony, Zakiesato stated that regardless of his position, the accused must be held accountable for his actions.
When asked whether the accused should be immediately removed from his position, Zakiesato stated that discussions are currently underway with the residents of Residency Colony regarding the matter.
He added that while he cannot disclose all internal discussions at this stage, the residents of the colony are in constant communication and maintained that if any chairman, GB, or community leader commits such a wrongful act, they should be stripped of their leadership position.
