EMN Dimapur, January 16 Police personnel of Dimapur have taken into custody several persons on various charges of illegal possession of banned substances, and another for peddling illegal SIM cards. The police issued a press release on Friday to offer updates. On January 8, Dimapur Police seized 1144 cases of assorted illegal Indian Made Foreign Liquor that the police said were worth several lakh. “The consignment was intercepted in a Truck bearing registration NL-07-A -6164 proceeding towards Kohima with fake consignment papers,” the press release said. The driver of the vehicles has been identified as one Rijayuddin of Bishnupur in Manipur and has been arrested. “A case has been registered at Diphupar Police Station for further investigation. The seizure is amongst one of the highest detections made in recent times.” Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) is the official term used by governments, businesses and media in India to refer to all types of hard liquor manufactured in the country other than indigenous alcoholic beverages such as fenny, toddy, arrack and others. IMFL is also referred to spirits that are produced in foreign countries and imported to India in bulk quantities and bottled in an Excise Bonded Warehouse by the Importers. A common characteristic of many IMFLs, distinct from spirits elsewhere in the world, is that irrespective of the final product the starting ingredient is a neutral spirit distilled from molasses, a byproduct of the sugar industry. For example, whisky in most countries would be distilled from grain, while Indian whisky is made from distilled molasses spirit, blended with grain or malt-based whisky, which may include imported whisky. The same applies to other IMFL spirits, like rum or vodka. However some recent entrants distill spirits per traditional methods even when manufacturing in India. Drug smuggler nabbed Also, on January 9, police stopped a vehicle that was reportedly carrying 5000 capsules of the banned drug Spasmo Proxivon. The drugs were found in the possession of one Jamaluddin, the police said.
