KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 16: Though the living standard of the people has enormously improved in recent years, Dr. ES Raja Gopal said the easy and comfortable lifestyles of the people has come with a price by contributing to the global warming, which has become a serious issue today.
Giving a lecture on ‘Global Warming’ at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, today, Dr. ES Raja Gopal, INSA Honorary Scientist and former Director of National Physical Laboratory (CSIR), said man-made release of carbon dioxide has increased much more than ever before in the history of the world.
Although the latest technologies and gadgets have made human lives simpler, Dr Gopal said global warming has become a serious global problem. Despite possibility of some solutions in near future, he said ‘the success is not very easy.’
He pointed out that man made acceleration of the warming process in the temperature is accumulating steadily over the years disturbing balance of nature resulting to melting of polar ice, rise of sea level, submerging of low lying areas, change of climate patterns, monsoon shifts, increase in floods and droughts, increase of extreme events, instability to food security etc.Attributing to the increase in population growth across the globe, energy usage in the form of coal, oil, gases etc and environment degradation towards global warming, Dr. Gopal said there is a need for concern from people across the globe to reduce carbon dioxide emission, reduce the use of coal, petroleum etc, reduce other green house gases emission etc. He also suggested that an individual can do his bit by using energy efficiency light bulbs, gadgets, equipments and also use public transportation as much as possible.
Dr. Gopal has written 2 books, edited 2 books and authored more than 250 research papers. He has guided more than 60 students for their PhD/MSc (Engineering).
Besides other awards and honours, Dr Gopal was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Award for Physical Sciences (1978), Sir CV Raman Award of the Acoustical Society of India (1978-80), INSA Homi Jehangir Bhabha Medal (1994), BRSI Life Time Achievement Medal (2005) and ISOI Annual Award (2005).
