KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 15: With the ever increasing population in the State, there is a felt need to impart and adopt sustainable food security plan to improve the growth rate of the State. Keeping this in mind, Directorate of School Education Nagaland (DoSE), Kohima, organised a State science seminar on September 14 at Rüzhükhrie on the theme, “Pulses for sustainable food security: Prospects and challenges.”
Gracing the programme as the chief guest, Additional Director (HOD), DSE, Wonthungo Tsopoe, said the literacy rate of Nagaland at 79.55%, which is higher than the national rate, is still not sufficient enough to sustain livelihood. He, therefore, stressed that quality education and better governance were needed to improve the literacy rate as well as the economy of the state. He said importance should not only be given to textual knowledge but also to students’ practical assets. Terming the topic of the seminar aptly, he said the need of the hour for our State was to find a sustainable means to improve the economy. Citing the lack of insufficient teachers in Maths and Science, he encouraged the students to take interest in these subjects, while he also encouraged the students to take the challenges and work hard to make our state productive and economically self-sufficient in the future.
He added that winning or losing was not important but the participation count because ‘the youth of today through determination and hard work will determine the footsteps of the future.’
The seminar, an annual event, saw the participation of students from all the 11 districts from 19 schools. The students were judged based on the scientific content in the presentation, fluency of speech, answers to the questions asked on spot and use of the visuals.
